Centre Can Reclaim Leased Land for Public Interest: Khattar

Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has stated that the central government retains the authority to reclaim leased land either before or after the lease period expires, whenever public interest demands such action. This statement comes in the context of the ongoing controversy surrounding the eviction of the Gymkhana Club from its prime location in Delhi.

Government's Leasehold Portfolio in Delhi

Currently, the government administers over 60,500 leases covering nearly 20,000 acres of land across the national capital. These leased properties include some of the most coveted locations in the city, such as those occupied by prestigious clubs, institutions, and commercial establishments. The minister's remarks highlight the government's stance that leasehold rights are not absolute and must yield to broader public considerations.

Master Plan Developments

Khattar also provided updates on the long-pending Master Plan for Delhi, which he said is on the verge of being notified. The plan has been delayed for years due to various administrative and legal hurdles. Additionally, the National Capital Region (NCR) Master Plan is expected to be finalized soon. A meeting scheduled for June 16 will address the remaining objections and pave the way for its finalization.

The minister emphasized that these plans are crucial for the planned development of the region, addressing issues such as housing, transportation, and green spaces. The prompt notification of the Master Plan is expected to unlock new opportunities for infrastructure development and urban renewal in Delhi.

Khattar's comments have sparked debate among legal experts and urban planners, with some arguing that the government's power to reclaim land must be exercised judiciously to avoid arbitrary actions. Others support the move as necessary to ensure that public assets are used for the benefit of the larger population.
