Centre Directs States to Tackle LPG Supply Issues and Prevent Panic
The Central government on Wednesday issued a directive to all states, urging them to actively address constraints in the supply of LPG cylinders and ensure that fears of scarcity do not escalate into law and order problems. This move comes amid reports of panic booking and concerns over potential shortages in cooking gas availability across the country.
Meeting with Top Officials Highlights Supply Priorities
In a high-level meeting chaired by Home Secretary Govind Mohan, with chief secretaries and Directors General of Police (DGPs) in attendance, Petroleum Secretary Niraj Mittal reassured state officials that there is no reason for panic. He emphasized that the availability of both natural gas and domestic LPG supply remains a top priority for the government. The Centre shared details of two recent orders, clarifying that restrictions on LPG distribution apply solely to commercial establishments, with hospitals and educational institutions exempted from these limitations.
An official stated, "Since there is no shortage to meet domestic LPG supply, states have a bigger role to ensure that there is no panic buying." This underscores the government's confidence in maintaining adequate stocks for household needs.
Combating Black Marketing and Hoarding
State governments have been specifically instructed to crack down on black marketing and hoarding of cooking gas cylinders. The Centre highlighted the importance of monitoring these activities to prevent artificial scarcity and price manipulation. Additionally, states were asked to keep a close watch on the prices of essential commodities, given that ample availability of these items has been confirmed.
Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare addressed the meeting, noting that prices of essential commodities are currently in a comfortable zone. She added that the Centre is actively monitoring 40 key commodities to ensure stability. "States were informed that Centre is tapping additional sources to increase availability and that alternative option of electric induction should be looked at to tide over the crisis," another official mentioned, pointing towards proactive measures to mitigate any potential disruptions.
Enhanced Security and Monitoring Measures
Home Secretary Govind Mohan advised states to bolster the security of LPG supply chain infrastructure and personnel. He called for daily monitoring of LPG supplies and real-time busting of rumors, particularly those spread on social media, to avoid unnecessary panic among the public. To facilitate this, states have been directed to establish control rooms at both the state and district levels to monitor the evolving situation closely.
Furthermore, officials have been designated for grievances redressal, mirroring the approach taken during the Covid-19 pandemic. This structured response aims to ensure swift resolution of issues and maintain public confidence in the supply system.
The Centre's comprehensive strategy focuses on maintaining domestic LPG availability, preventing market distortions, and ensuring law and order, thereby safeguarding consumer interests during this period of heightened concern.
