The Chamarajanagar City Municipal Council (CMC) has decided to establish an electric crematorium at a cost of Rs 4 crore. Two acres of land has been identified near Yedabetta, close to the Chamarajanagar Institute of Medical Sciences, to set up the facility. This initiative aims to reduce the use of firewood for cremations, which contributes significantly to air pollution in the region.
Growing Demand for Modern Cremation Facility
The population of Chamarajanagar town has been increasing steadily due to rising industrial activities. Consequently, there has been a growing demand for an electric crematorium to provide a cleaner and more efficient alternative to traditional wood-based cremation. Although the CMC had previously announced plans for such a facility, budget constraints and other logistical issues delayed its implementation. Now, the municipal administration has floated and awarded the tender, paving the way for construction to begin soon.
Details of the Project
Speaking to Times of India, CMC Commissioner Parashuram confirmed that the tender awarding process is complete. He stated, "The CMC will commence construction of the facility at a cost of Rs 4 crore shortly. This new high-tech crematorium will curb pollution caused by burning firewood. It will have the capacity to cremate 8 to 10 bodies per day." The facility is expected to serve the growing needs of the town while minimizing environmental impact.
Additional Infrastructure Development
In addition to the crematorium itself, the CMC has initiated measures to develop supporting infrastructure on the two-acre plot. This includes constructing connecting roads, a parking area, a park, seating areas, and a drinking water facility. These amenities will ensure that the site is accessible and comfortable for visitors.
Benefits for Marginalized Communities
Mahadevashetty, a local resident of Chamarajanagar, highlighted that small and marginal sections of the community often face difficulties in cremating their family members due to a lack of burial grounds and graveyards. The new electric crematorium will provide an affordable and dignified option for these families, addressing a long-standing need in the town.
