In a significant move to tackle persistent sanitation issues, Chandigarh Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla on Monday laid the foundation stone for a major project aimed at strengthening the sewerage network in Burail. The initiative is designed to provide a permanent solution to the recurring problems of sewer blockages and overflows that have plagued the area.
Addressing Long-Standing Public Grievances
The Municipal Corporation had been inundated with repeated complaints from Burail residents regarding sewer-related woes. Following field inspections, officials identified the root cause: the existing underground lines were not only of an inadequate diameter but were also heavily clogged with silt. This dual problem rendered both manual cleaning efforts and mechanical methods largely ineffective, creating a cycle of disruption and unsanitary conditions.
Comprehensive Project Plan for Lasting Solutions
To address the core issues on a long-term basis, the civic body has charted a comprehensive plan. The key components of the work include laying new, larger-diameter pipelines to enhance capacity and flow. The project also involves constructing additional manhole chambers to facilitate easier future maintenance and providing new house sewer connections along the proposed alignment.
The scope of the ₹91-lakh project is extensive. Beyond the main pipeline work, it covers associated tasks such as surplus soil disposal, sand filling, necessary road cutting and subsequent restoration, and the reconnection of sewer and water supply lines wherever required during the process.
A Push for Timely Execution and Improved Sanitation
Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla emphasized the critical need for timely completion of the project. She stressed that minimizing public inconvenience during the construction phase is a priority, with the ultimate goal being a substantial and lasting improvement in the sanitation and overall living environment for the residents of Burail. This infrastructure upgrade marks a focused investment in solving a critical civic issue that has affected daily life in the locality.
