Ahead of the bustling Christmas and New Year celebrations, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has launched a major drive to audit fire and rescue preparedness across the city. Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla spearheaded the initiative, conducting extensive checks at prominent hotels, restaurants, cafés, bars, and commercial complexes to ensure public safety.
High-Level Team Conducts Surprise Checks
The inspection team was a high-powered one, led by Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla herself. She was accompanied by Fire Committee Chairman Maheshinder Singh and Joint Commissioner Dr. Inderjeet. Senior officers from the Fire & Rescue Services department were also part of the team, providing technical expertise during the evaluations.
The drive's core objective was to verify strict compliance with prescribed fire safety norms and ensure the city is ready to handle any emergencies during the peak festive season when public gatherings are at their highest.
What Did the Inspectors Look For?
The team conducted a thorough review of multiple critical safety aspects at each establishment. Their checklist included:
- Functionality and availability of fire safety equipment like extinguishers and hydrants.
- Operational status of fire alarm and detection systems.
- Clear and unobstructed emergency exits.
- Well-marked and accessible evacuation routes.
- Overall emergency preparedness and staff awareness.
Mixed Findings: Compliance and Deficiencies Noted
The inspections revealed a mixed picture. While several establishments were found to have adequate and satisfactory safety arrangements, a concerning number fell short. Officials identified lapses in critical areas, including non-functional firefighting equipment and improperly maintained or blocked emergency exits.
Notices were promptly issued to establishments found lacking. These notices direct the management to rectify all identified shortcomings within a stipulated time frame. Authorities have warned that failure to comply with the directives will invite strict legal action under the relevant rules and regulations.
Officials Stress Zero-Tolerance Policy
Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla emphasized a zero-tolerance approach towards negligence in fire safety compliance, especially during times of festive gatherings where risks are elevated. Fire Committee Chairman Maheshinder Singh reiterated the non-negotiable need for strict adherence to all safety regulations.
To ensure the gaps are closed, Joint Commissioner Dr. Inderjeet has instructed the department to conduct follow-up inspections. These subsequent checks will monitor whether the notified establishments have taken corrective measures, ensuring the city celebrates the holidays safely and securely.
