Punjab Governor Commemorates 75 Years of Chandigarh's Architectural Legacy
Chandigarh Governor and Union Territory Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria participated in a significant program on Monday titled "75 Years of Chandigarh: Honouring Indian Modernists of Chandigarh" at the Government Museum and Art Gallery. This event was organized by the Chandigarh administration in collaboration with the Chandigarh Citizens Foundation to celebrate the city's remarkable 75-year journey since its inception.
Chandigarh as a Symbol of Modern India's Vision
Addressing the distinguished gathering, Governor Kataria emphasized that Chandigarh symbolizes modern India's vision of planned urban development. He highlighted how the city has emerged as a global model of balanced living since construction began in 1951. The governor praised the meticulous planning that has made Chandigarh renowned worldwide for its harmonious blend of architecture, green spaces, and infrastructure.
Kataria specifically acknowledged the crucial contributions of Indian architects, engineers, and administrators who translated the city's ambitious vision into tangible reality. He stressed the urgent need to preserve Chandigarh's architectural heritage while simultaneously advancing toward sustainable and future-ready development that meets contemporary challenges.
Honoring the Pioneers of Chandigarh's Development
The ceremony featured the honoring of the first group of twelve Indian modernists who played instrumental roles in Chandigarh's planning and development. Since most of these pioneers are no longer living, their family members received the honors on their behalf. Senior architect SD Sharma was the sole honoree to accept the recognition in person, representing the living legacy of Chandigarh's architectural visionaries.
The program underscored several critical themes for Chandigarh's continued evolution:
- Conservation of Chandigarh's unique architecture
- Preservation of the city's extensive green cover
- Maintenance of planned infrastructure systems
- Strengthening of smart city initiatives
- Implementation of sustainable urban practices
Call for Public Participation and Future Initiatives
Governor Kataria emphasized the importance of public participation in shaping Chandigarh's future. He urged citizens, institutions, and particularly the youth to actively engage in programs planned between 2026 and 2028, which will commemorate 75 years of the city's existence. These initiatives aim to foster greater community involvement in urban conservation and development efforts.
The governor also highlighted the significant role of the Chandigarh Citizens Foundation, established in 2025 under the leadership of V P Malik. This organization has been instrumental in promoting heritage conservation, inclusivity, and sustainable living practices throughout the city.
Reinforcing Chandigarh's Identity as a Model City
The event concluded with a powerful call for collective efforts to preserve Chandigarh's legacy and reinforce its identity as a model planned city. Participants emphasized that maintaining Chandigarh's unique character requires ongoing commitment from all stakeholders, including government bodies, civic organizations, and residents.
As Chandigarh enters its 76th year, the focus remains on balancing heritage conservation with modern urban needs, ensuring that the city continues to serve as an inspiration for planned urban development both nationally and internationally.
