Chandigarh MC Recruitment Plan Stalled for Two Months

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation's proposal to recruit more than 270 employees through direct recruitment has been awaiting a decision from the UT administration for over two months. Sources indicate that the proposal, initially examined by the local bodies department, has now been forwarded to the personnel department for a final decision.

Recruitment Agency in Focus

Municipal Corporation officials have maintained that they proposed Panjab University (PU) as the recruitment agency, following past practices. A source from the MC said, "The matter is with the administration. Only after a decision is communicated can the process move forward." However, UT administration sources revealed that the proposal is being closely scrutinized, particularly the rationale behind engaging PU for conducting the recruitment exams. "The MC's view has been sought, and a final decision will be taken after evaluating all aspects," a source added.

Acute Staff Shortage

The delay comes amid an acute staff shortage in the civic body, which is currently operating with nearly 60% fewer regular employees than its sanctioned strength. The corporation plans to fill over 270 posts on a permanent basis, including 118 clerks, 79 firemen, 33 drivers, 20 junior engineers, and two sub-divisional engineers. Other positions include sub-inspectors for the enforcement wing, draftsmen, and stenotypists.

Officials stressed that expediting the recruitment process is crucial to addressing manpower gaps across key departments. The prolonged delay has raised concerns about the corporation's ability to deliver services efficiently.
