In a significant move toward consumer empowerment, residents of Chandigarh can now personally verify the accuracy of their electricity meters at a newly established testing laboratory. The Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDL) has inaugurated this state-of-the-art facility at the Sector 56 sub-station, marking a pioneering initiative in the region's power sector.

Transparency Through Meter Testing

The primary objective behind establishing this in-house meter testing facility is to guarantee that every electricity meter distributed to consumers meets strict accuracy standards. According to CPDL officials, this development represents a major step forward in enhancing transparency within the power distribution system and ensuring fair billing practices for all electricity users.

Arun Kumar Verma, director of CPDL, emphasized that the new laboratory will enable comprehensive quality and performance assessments of meters before their installation. The facility is scheduled to become fully operational soon, representing what officials describe as a significant milestone in improving service quality and strengthening consumer confidence in the power distribution system.

Accessible Testing for Consumers

The testing facility will be available to consumers who wish to verify the accuracy of their already installed meters. Residents can submit applications at their respective Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) offices to request meter testing services. This consumer-focused approach allows individuals to address concerns about potential meter inaccuracies directly.

A senior official explained the dual purpose of the facility: "While CPDL will test all meters before installation on consumer premises to ensure accuracy, the system also accommodates consumers who want their existing meters checked. They simply need to apply at the concerned SDO office."

Quality Certification and Grievance Redressal

CPDL has initiated the process to obtain certification from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), aiming to establish the facility as a benchmark for quality assurance in the power sector. This accreditation would serve as a testament to the organization's commitment to customer satisfaction and trust.

Beyond meter testing, CPDL plans to establish an advanced consumer grievance redressal system that will include a dedicated helpline and online complaint registration platform. This integrated approach is designed to ensure prompt resolution of consumer issues and enhance overall service delivery.

The power distribution company has also announced significant investments in modernizing Chandigarh's electrical infrastructure. These upgrades aim to provide 24×7, safe, and reliable power to consumers while enhancing service quality through comprehensive refurbishment of the existing power structure.

Regarding electricity pricing, the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) will continue to oversee consumer tariff determinations, maintaining transparency and fairness in power pricing despite these infrastructure improvements.
