The Chandigarh Administration is set to eliminate manual checking of commercial vehicles, replacing it with an automated system to streamline traffic management and reduce congestion. The decision, announced by the Transport Department, aims to enhance efficiency and transparency in vehicle inspections.
Automated System Implementation
Under the new system, commercial vehicles will be monitored through cameras and sensors installed at key entry points. These devices will capture vehicle details, including registration numbers and load capacity, and cross-check them with a centralized database. Any discrepancies will trigger automatic alerts to enforcement authorities.
Benefits of the Change
The shift from manual to automated checks is expected to bring several advantages:
- Reduced Traffic Jams: Eliminating manual stops will significantly cut down waiting times at checkpoints.
- Enhanced Efficiency: Automated systems can process vehicles faster and with greater accuracy.
- Transparency: Digital records minimize human intervention, reducing corruption and errors.
Pilot Phase and Rollout
A pilot project will begin soon at the Zirakpur and Mohali entry points. Based on its success, the system will be expanded to other locations. The Transport Department is also working on integrating the system with the National Highway Traffic Management System for seamless data sharing.
Officials believe this move will modernize Chandigarh's traffic infrastructure and set a precedent for other cities in the region.
