Chennai's Weekly Waste Drive Removes 707 Tonnes of Bulky Items

The Greater Chennai Corporation has successfully collected and disposed of a massive 707.5 tonnes of old household items from across the city. This effort is part of a weekly initiative that started on October 11, 2025.

Massive Collection from Residents

Officials collected the waste from 1,871 residents who participated in the program. The initiative specifically targets bulky items that are difficult to dispose of through regular waste collection services.

Recent Friday Haul

On Friday, January 17, alone, the corporation gathered 46.94 tonnes of discarded items. This included old sofas, mattresses, furniture, and clothes from 94 different locations. All collected materials were sent to the Kodungaiyur incineration facility for proper disposal.

How Residents Can Participate

The program runs every Saturday and requires prior registration. Chennai residents have multiple convenient ways to book this service:

  • Use the Namma Chennai mobile application
  • Call the dedicated helpline at 1913
  • Send details through WhatsApp to the designated number

This systematic approach helps keep Chennai cleaner while providing residents with an easy solution for disposing of large household items.
