Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation commissioner Dr G S Sameeran conducted an inspection of ongoing development projects across the city on Friday, focusing on the pedestrian plaza along MC Road at Royapuram, among other sites. He directed officials to expedite the project, which has remained incomplete for over a year due to delays in relocating underground transmission lines and removing encroachments.
MC Road Pedestrian Plaza Progress
The pedestrian plaza project, part of the Singara Chennai 2.0 scheme, is being executed at an estimated cost of ₹23.04 crore in wards 49 and 51. Several portions of the road have been excavated, affecting daily commute, with barely half of the 1-kilometer stretch completed. The work includes laying granite cobbles on roads, developing pedestrian walkways, installing artistic streetlights and signage boards, and upgrading stormwater drains and sewage canals. The commissioner directed officers to ensure completion by the end of this year.
Amma Unavagam Canteen Inspection
Sameeran also visited an Amma Unavagam canteen located inside the Government Stanley Medical College Hospital campus in ward 52. He interacted with the public regarding the quality of food and services provided. The commissioner instructed staff to maintain cleanliness in the kitchen and ensure quality food for all visitors.
Park and Public Facility Reviews
The commissioner later inspected Robinson playground in ward 51 and Anna Park in ward 52. He interacted with children and walkers using the facilities, discussing available amenities. Sameeran also reviewed the maintenance of the free public toilet inside Robinson playground and instructed workers to keep the premises clean at all times.
Burial Ground Maintenance
At Moolakothalam burial ground in ward 53, Sameeran reviewed ongoing maintenance and development works. He instructed officials to improve greenery by planting saplings and creating landscaped lawns while ensuring cleanliness at the facility.
