Chennai's Key Rail Links Face Delays: MRTS Extension and Metro Phase 2 Stretch Postponed
Chennai Rail Links Delayed: MRTS, Metro Phase 2 Face Setbacks

Chennai's Major Rail Connectivity Projects Hit by Delays

The much-anticipated launch of two crucial rail links in Chennai has been postponed, dealing a blow to commuters awaiting improved connectivity. The delays affect both the MRTS extension from Velachery to St Thomas Mount and the inaugural operational stretch of Metro Rail Phase 2.

MRTS Extension Faces Safety Approval Hurdle

The 4.5-kilometer MRTS extension, which took nearly two decades to complete, was scheduled to open on March 10. However, the project has hit a snag as the chief commissioner of railway safety (CCRS) has yet to grant the mandatory approval following an inspection on March 5. Railway officials remain hopeful that clearance may arrive within a day or two, but the opening will now miss its planned date.

This extension is particularly significant as it will connect the MRTS with suburban rail and metro services at St Thomas Mount, creating a vital multimodal transport hub. Commuters have expressed frustration over the delay, having long awaited this link to enhance travel efficiency across the city.

Historical challenges have plagued the MRTS extension, including:

  • Prolonged land acquisition issues
  • Coordination difficulties among multiple agencies
  • Repeated postponements over the years

Metro Rail Phase 2 Stretch Requires Additional Work

Simultaneously, the first operational corridor of Metro Rail Phase 2—a 14.6-kilometer stretch from Poonamallee Bypass to Vadapalani—has received conditional clearance from the commissioner of metro rail safety (CMRS). However, services cannot commence until Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) completes the installation of 26 deck slabs on the double-decker viaduct along the corridor.

Officials estimate this critical construction work will be finished around March 10. Sources indicate that CMRL previously considered opening the line on March 11, with an initial operational plan to run trains between Poonamallee and Porur. The Porur–Vadapalani section would follow once the double-decker viaduct work is fully completed.

"Once the work on the double-decker section is completed, we will get more clarity on the opening of the line," an official stated, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the exact launch timeline.

Impact on Commuters and Connectivity

Both corridors were expected to significantly enhance connectivity to poorly linked suburbs and reduce travel time for thousands of daily commuters. The delays represent a setback for urban mobility in Chennai, where efficient public transport is increasingly crucial.

The MRTS extension's delay particularly affects those relying on integrated transport options, while the Metro Phase 2 postponement impacts residents in western Chennai areas awaiting improved metro access. Authorities continue to work toward resolving the approval and construction issues to bring these vital projects to fruition.
