Chennai to Roll Out Image-Based Road Signage Across 300 Major Roads
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced a comprehensive ₹20 crore initiative to install advanced image-based road signage across 300 key routes in the city. This ambitious project aims to significantly enhance commuter convenience and road safety by providing clear visual guidance and timely warnings.
Comprehensive Safety Features and Visual Guidance
The new signboards will offer detailed directions to major landmarks while incorporating cautionary messages specifically designed for high-risk areas. Special attention will be given to accident-prone stretches, school zones, pedestrian crossings, and speed breakers that have historically been poorly marked. According to senior GCC officials, the signage will feature visually intuitive symbols that transcend language barriers, making them accessible to both local residents and visitors unfamiliar with Tamil.

Addressing Urban Growth and Traffic Challenges
This initiative directly responds to Chennai's rapidly expanding vehicle population and increasing traffic congestion. Urban planners have long identified inconsistent or missing signboards as a major contributor to driver confusion and elevated accident risks. The standardized image-based format represents a strategic upgrade from traditional text-heavy signage, potentially benefiting millions of daily commuters.
"The proposed signboards will not only indicate routes and major landmarks but also include cautionary messages, particularly in accident-prone stretches and high-traffic zones," explained a senior GCC official. "Special emphasis will be placed on school areas, where the awareness boards will encourage safer driving practices."

Residents have consistently advocated for clearer signage, especially in newly developed and peripheral areas where infrastructure hasn't kept pace with urban expansion. Community leaders have welcomed the initiative as a potential turning point for traffic management in the metropolitan area.
"If implemented effectively, the initiative could mark a significant step toward improving traffic discipline, making the roads more organized, predictable, and safer for the public," stated B Niranjan Patnaik, president of the Kamarajar Nagar Residents' Welfare Association in Ernavoor.
The corporation plans to prioritize locations with historically high accident rates and inadequate existing signage. By combining directional information with safety warnings through universally recognizable symbols, officials anticipate reduced confusion among drivers, improved traffic flow, and enhanced pedestrian safety across Chennai's busiest corridors.
