Chennai Water Crisis: 10,000 Residents Face Scarcity Despite Full Reservoirs
While summer has not yet arrived and Chennai's reservoirs are comfortably holding 10 TMC of water, a severe water crisis is already gripping more than 10,000 residents in wards 29 and 30 of Madhavaram. The scarcity stems from a lack of proper piped water infrastructure, leaving their long-pending demand for regular water supply unfulfilled.
Limited Piped Supply in Select Localities
Currently, piped water is supplied only to a few specific localities within these wards, including Devaki Nagar, Majestic Colony, Gowri Colony, Thirupathi Thangavel Nagar, and Thanigai Nagar. According to Metrowater, the city's water utility, a total of 1,237 million liters per day (MLD) is supplied across the 15 zones under corporation limits. However, this distribution is uneven, highlighting significant gaps in infrastructure.
Residents Voice Frustration Over Incomplete Works
D Neelakannan, president of the alliance of residents welfare associations, emphasized the ongoing issues. "For years, residents have been asking the department to inspect areas such as Thirumalai Nagar, Shastri Nagar, Munusamy Nagar, Balakrishna Nagar, and Thanigachalam E Block, where Metrowater works were not completed," he stated.
He pointed out that during the monsoon season, Metrowater often undertakes underground drainage and water supply projects, which leave roads and residential streets dug up. "Now is the ideal time for them to complete the pending works," Neelakannan urged, noting that the current period offers a window for efficient construction without weather disruptions.
Dependence on Tankers and Unaddressed Complaints
Residents in the affected areas are heavily reliant on private water tankers and Metrowater lorries for their daily water needs. Many have repeatedly submitted complaints to Metrowater, requesting pipeline connections, but these issues remain largely unaddressed, exacerbating their hardship.
Metrowater's Response and Future Plans
In response to the crisis, Metrowater officials provided insights into their efforts. "In 2025, we gave a total of 49,000 connections around the corporation limits. In areas such as Madhavaram and its proximity, the works are carried out at a faster pace. By the end of this year, the entire area will be covered," they assured.
This statement aims to reassure residents that comprehensive infrastructure development is underway, with a target to eliminate water scarcity through expanded piped networks. However, the immediate reality for thousands continues to be one of uncertainty and reliance on alternative water sources.
