Pattabiram Railway Station in Chennai Confronts Major Sanitation and Safety Challenges

Pattabiram railway station, a bustling suburban hub located approximately 25 kilometers from Chennai Central, is currently grappling with severe sanitation and safety issues that are impacting the daily lives of commuters. From sewage overflow and rampant garbage dumping on the premises to a bumpy approach road, the station's deteriorating conditions have sparked significant concern among local residents and passenger associations.

Sewage Overflow and Health Hazards

One of the most pressing problems at Pattabiram station is the flow of sewage from stormwater drains into railway land near Platform 3. This has led to wastewater stagnating at the station entrance, creating a persistent foul smell. According to T Sadagopan, president of the Tamil Nadu Progressive Consumer Welfare Association, this stagnant water has turned into a breeding ground for mosquitoes, raising potential health risks for the thousands of people who use the station every day.

"The sewage issue is not just an inconvenience; it's a serious public health threat," Sadagopan emphasized. "Commuters, including office-goers and students, are exposed to unsanitary conditions that could lead to diseases." At least 10,000 commuters rely on this station daily, making the situation particularly urgent.

Garbage Pile-Up and Infrastructure Neglect

Compounding the sanitation crisis is the accumulation of garbage on the station premises. Irregular waste collection in the surrounding areas has resulted in plastic and vegetable waste being dumped near the railway booking office. Additionally, an office building constructed near the cabin remains uncommissioned, and the surrounding space has been unofficially converted into a dumping yard.

A Roy Rosario, president of the Rail Passengers Association, highlighted further safety concerns: "Overgrown bushes and unpruned trees along the approach roads have turned this spot into a den for anti-social elements, compromising passenger safety." Despite generating an annual revenue of 4 crore rupees, the station lacks a dedicated station master, with maintenance handled by a clerk-in-charge who is not available round the clock. This has led to frequent disruptions in the public announcement system, adding to commuter frustrations.

Service Reductions and Commuter Inconvenience

The situation has worsened following service reductions during the pandemic. Nearly 20 pairs of EMU train services were terminated at Avadi, and several Tiruvallur services were cancelled. Sadagopan noted that previously, 54 EMU services operated at the station, but now only long-distance trains from Tiruttani and Arakkonam stop at Pattabiram. These trains are often delayed, forcing commuters to wait for 35 to 40 minutes.

"We have repeatedly requested the railways to restore the cancelled services and extend short-distance EMUs beyond Avadi, but no action has been taken," he added. Association members report that multiple complaints have been sent to the department since July 2022, yet responses have been lacking. DRM Shailendra Singh was unavailable for comment on these matters.

Call for Immediate Action

The combined issues of sewage overflow, garbage dumping, poor maintenance, and reduced train services paint a grim picture for Pattabiram station. Commuters and advocacy groups are urging railway authorities to address these problems promptly to ensure a safe and hygienic environment. As one of Chennai's key suburban stops, the station's condition reflects broader challenges in urban infrastructure and public health management in Tamil Nadu.

Without swift intervention, the risks to commuter health and safety are likely to escalate, underscoring the need for coordinated efforts between local authorities and railway officials to implement effective solutions.
