CM Stalin Virtually Inaugurates Ukkadam Bus Terminal-1 in Coimbatore

Chief Minister M K Stalin inaugurated the Ukkadam bus terminal-1 in Coimbatore on Friday through a videoconferencing session from Chennai. This marks a significant step in enhancing the city's public transport infrastructure, with the Coimbatore Corporation overseeing the project as part of a broader initiative to improve urban connectivity.

Project Details and Costs

The Coimbatore Corporation has planned to construct two bus terminals in Ukkadam at a total estimated cost of Rs 21.55 crore. The newly inaugurated terminal one, which spans 3.27 acres of land opposite the Ukkadam Periyakulam, was built specifically at a cost of Rs 13 crore. This investment reflects the government's commitment to modernizing transportation facilities in the region.

Facilities and Amenities

The state-of-the-art bus terminal boasts a range of modern amenities designed to enhance passenger comfort and convenience. It includes:

  • 28 bus bays to accommodate multiple vehicles simultaneously.
  • 14 shops and two food courts for retail and dining options.
  • A vast waiting area with tensile roofing and seats for 60 passengers.
  • Essential facilities such as a feeding room, public Wi-Fi, and mobile charging stations.

These features aim to provide a seamless and enjoyable travel experience for commuters, aligning with contemporary urban standards.

Future Technological Upgrades

The corporation has outlined plans to integrate advanced technological systems at the terminal. Once data is received from the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, the facility will implement:

  1. Live bus tracking and digital notifications for real-time updates.
  2. Display screens at the entrance showing bus numbers, destinations, and arrival/departure timings, similar to airport systems.
  3. Installation of 30 CCTV cameras with a live monitoring room and emergency response systems for enhanced security.

A corporation official emphasized that these upgrades will significantly improve operational efficiency and passenger safety, making the terminal a model for future projects.

Additional Inaugurations

In addition to the bus terminal, Chief Minister Stalin inaugurated two Mudhalvar Padaippagam facilities in Coimbatore. These reading and co-working spaces are located at Prabhu Nagar in Kavundampalayam and Gandhi Maa Nagar, with each facility constructed at a cost of Rs 3.36 crore. These initiatives underscore the government's focus on promoting educational and community development alongside infrastructure improvements.

The inaugurations highlight ongoing efforts to boost urban development and civic amenities in Coimbatore, contributing to the city's growth and livability.
