Cuttack Municipal Corporation Launches Major Eviction Drive in CDA Sectors

In a significant move to reclaim public spaces and ensure planned urban development, the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) on Thursday launched a comprehensive eviction drive in the CDA Sector-7 and Sector-8 areas. The operation targeted unauthorised structures that had encroached upon major roads, footpaths, and government land, posing risks to public safety and civic amenities.

Demolition of Illegal Structures

CMC enforcement staff, supported by police personnel, demolished more than 10 illegal structures during the drive. These included temporary sheds and extensions that had been erected without proper authorisation. Earthmovers were pressed into service to dismantle the structures efficiently, while enforcement teams regulated traffic to minimise disruption during the operation.

Roads Cleared of Encroachments

Among the key roads freed from illegal encroachments was the one connecting Sector 7 area near Rajkumar Salon to another arterial road. Additionally, another road linking Sector 7 to Sector 8 near Adrith Dental hub was also cleared. This action aims to restore free movement on these vital pathways, which had been narrowed down by unauthorised constructions, leading to frequent traffic snarls.

Official Statements and Objectives

A CMC official emphasised that the eviction was part of an ongoing initiative to ensure planned urban development and public safety. "We will not let any illegal structures in the vicinity," the official stated. The operation also focused on clearing drains and open spaces that had been blocked due to unauthorised constructions, which often contribute to waterlogging during the monsoon season.

CMC Mayor Subhash Singh highlighted the broader objectives of the drive, noting that it would continue in phases across other areas of the city. "The objective of this drive is to reclaim public land and ensure free movement on roads and footpaths. Encroachments pose serious safety risks and hamper civic amenities. Similar drives will be carried out in other sectors as well," added Singh.

Resident Reactions and Broader Impact

Residents of the area welcomed the move, with Srikant Samantaray, a resident of CDA Sector 7, expressing support. "We welcome the move. Illegal constructions had narrowed down roads and caused frequent traffic snarls in the area. This could have been done earlier so that such a large number of illegal constructions would not have taken place," said Samantaray.

Civic officials clarified that the enforcement drive is part of a larger plan to improve urban infrastructure and maintain order in the rapidly growing residential zones of Cuttack. By addressing illegal encroachments, the CMC aims to enhance the quality of life for residents and promote sustainable urban growth in the region.
