Coimbatore Corporation Unveils Dedicated Webpage for Junction Improvement Projects
The Coimbatore Municipal Corporation has officially launched a specialized webpage titled 'Kovai Junction Transformation Programme,' integrated into its official website. This initiative aims to provide comprehensive details on junction improvement projects across the city, focusing on enhancing traffic flow and pedestrian safety.
Detailed Junction Studies and Traffic Analysis
The webpage features in-depth studies for each selected junction, covering aspects such as traffic flow patterns, existing issues, and trial implementations of improvements. Key locations include the District Court Complex roundabout, Lanka Corner, Tatabad 6th Corner, Sanganoor-Sivananda Colony Junction, Nallampalayam, Power House, Kurichi Pirivi, Sarada Mills Junction, and Telungupalayam Junction.
Each junction undergoes a meticulous assessment process, starting with site understanding to evaluate land use, user behavior, road network hierarchy, and street functions. This is followed by issue mapping to identify critical problems, conflict points, and operational gaps. Data collection includes traffic volumes, composition, pedestrian movements, vehicle speed profiles, and road safety assessments.
Collaboration with Private Consultancy and Implementation Strategy
The corporation is partnering with the private consultancy firm Street Matrix for this project. After detailed observations, the team prepares conceptual design options and develops geometric drawings in compliance with standards. Reashma P S, co-founder and Managing Director of Street Matrix, explained that the team employs Tactical Urbanism Interventions.
"After a series of trials, we monitor and record performance and user responses. Based on requirements, the junction is refined, and the final design is implemented. A post-implementation report is prepared to evaluate outcomes and adapt learnings," Reashma stated. All details for each improved junction are uploaded to the webpage.
Successful Case Study and Future Plans
One notable success is the District Court Complex junction, which previously had three roundabouts leading to complicated traffic flow. After study and modifications, it now features only two roundabouts with improved alignment. Before-and-after images and traffic flow details are available on the webpage, along with updates on junctions in progress.
According to a senior corporation official, approximately 40 critical junctions in Coimbatore have been identified under this programme. Currently, 8-10 junctions are under trial runs, with 3-4 expected to begin shortly. Selection criteria include high accident frequency, significant pedestrian activity, complex traffic movements, and proximity to schools, colleges, and hospitals.
The primary goal of the project is to enhance road safety by reducing vehicle speeds and improving pedestrian safety, the official emphasized. This transparent approach through the webpage allows residents to track progress and outcomes, fostering community engagement in urban development efforts.
