Coimbatore City Corporation Launches Comprehensive Road Safety Initiative
The Coimbatore city corporation has officially initiated a detailed road safety audit and announced plans to establish a dedicated road safety cell. This proactive move aims to systematically address urban traffic hazards and enhance overall safety for all road users.
Comprehensive Audit to Identify and Mitigate Risks
The newly launched road safety audit represents a significant step toward data-driven urban management. The audit will meticulously compile accident data to identify dangerous black spots throughout the city. Based on this analysis, it will provide targeted recommendations for improving road design and enhancing junction safety.
Furthermore, the audit will involve a thorough analysis of traffic flow patterns and the preparation of strategic control plans. Key suggestions will include implementing effective speed control measures, installing appropriate warning boards, optimizing traffic signals, and deploying other essential safety infrastructure.
Strategic Implementation and Awareness Programs
Leveraging the audit findings, the corporation plans to undertake several critical actions. These include redesigning problematic roads, improving high-risk junctions, and implementing enhanced safety measures around sensitive areas such as schools, hospitals, and residential neighborhoods.
The initiative also prioritizes vulnerable road users by recommending better safety facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. Additionally, the corporation will organize road safety awareness camps to educate the public and prepare a comprehensive emergency response plan to handle accidents more efficiently.
Establishment of a Dedicated Road Safety Cell
To ensure sustained oversight, the corporation is creating a permanent road safety cell. According to official sources, this cell will be responsible for submitting periodic inspection reports. Its mandate includes ensuring strict adherence to established road safety standards and guidelines, continuously evaluating the effectiveness of implemented plans, and providing ongoing recommendations for improvements as needed.
To operationalize this cell, the corporation has approved the temporary appointment of key personnel for a six-month period. This team includes G Manuneethi, a retired divisional engineer from the Tamil Nadu National Highway's road safety wing, along with two graduates specializing in urban planning.
Expert Insights on Speed Control and Infrastructure
Highlighting the critical areas for improvement, Manuneethi emphasized that controlling vehicle speed within city limits is the primary element for preventing fatalities. "Adherence to speed limits within the city is paramount to avoiding fatal accidents," he stated. "When a person travels at speeds between 30 to 40 kmph, the severity of injury is significantly reduced, potentially saving lives."
He revealed an innovative collaboration with private technology companies. "We have received requests from private firms ready to collaborate. We will provide them with the official speed limits for every street and road in Coimbatore, which will then be updated on platforms like Google Maps. This integration will enable real-time warnings to appear for users who exceed the designated speed limits," Manuneethi explained.
Addressing Road Maintenance and Recurring Damage
Beyond speed management, Manuneethi pointed to the urgent need for better road maintenance. He stressed that greater focus should be placed on repairing bad roads and revising the financial allocations for such repairs.
"When preparing cost estimates for road repairs, it should not be treated as a one-time expense. A certain amount must be specifically allocated for patchwork or to address recurring damage, at least once or twice a year, to maintain road quality consistently," he added, underscoring the importance of sustainable infrastructure management.
