Coimbatore's First Air-Conditioned Bus Shelter Inaugurated in Sulur
Coimbatore has welcomed its first air-conditioned bus shelter in Sulur, a development poised to offer significant relief to commuters facing increasingly hot days. The shelter, inaugurated on Wednesday, March 11, was constructed at a cost of Rs12 lakh, aiming to enhance public comfort and convenience.
Funding and Construction Details
According to official sources, the Sulur town panchayat established the shelter with corporate social responsibility contributions from LG multi-speciality hospital, which provided Rs7 lakh. The remaining Rs5 lakh was sourced from the local body fund. Work on the project began in December 2025 and was completed in a record time, culminating in the recent inauguration.
The facility is equipped with modern amenities, including CCTV cameras for security and a selfie point for commuters. To prevent unauthorized occupancy, the shelter will be locked during nighttime hours.
Commuters Welcome the New Facility
Many long-distance commuters have expressed appreciation for the AC bus shelter, emphasizing the need for proper maintenance. V Saranya, a resident of Palladam who works at a finance company in Sulur, shared her experience: "Waiting for the bus in the hot sun is exhausting. This AC bus shelter offers much-needed comfort for commuters like me. I feel happy to sit here and take some rest, and I don't mind even if the bus comes late by 30 minutes."
N Kavitha, an accountant from Lakshmi Mills at Palladam, tested the shelter on Saturday and found it refreshing. She noted, "For those waiting for a bus after work, this set-up will surely provide a stress-free experience. It will be better if drinking water is made available within the shelter."
Local Government Initiatives and Future Plans
Sulur town panchayat president Devi Mannavan highlighted that the idea for the AC bus shelter emerged after the panchayat won the best panchayat award in 2024. "After that, we decided to do something different for the public and came up with the idea of an AC bus shelter," she said.
K Subramaniam, a resident of Kangeyam in Tirupur who works in Sulur, urged the local body to ensure proper upkeep of the facility. He also suggested that similar shelters at locations like Papampatti Pirivu and Singanallur would greatly benefit bus passengers, especially long-distance commuters.
The inauguration of this AC bus shelter marks a step forward in improving public infrastructure in Coimbatore, addressing the challenges posed by rising temperatures and enhancing the daily commute for residents.
