Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday handed over appointment letters and health cards to employees of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) at an event held at the NDMC Convention Centre. The initiative aims to provide job security and healthcare benefits to the municipal staff, many of whom were working on a contractual basis.
Key Highlights of the Initiative
The CM distributed appointment letters to over 1,200 NDMC employees, regularizing their services. Additionally, health cards were provided to ensure access to medical facilities for the workers and their families. This move is part of the Delhi government's broader effort to improve the working conditions of municipal employees.
Benefits for Employees
The health cards will cover medical expenses up to Rs 5 lakh per annum for each employee, including outpatient and inpatient treatments. The regularisation of jobs will also bring stability and better pension benefits for the workers.
Speaking at the event, Kejriwal said, "Our government is committed to the welfare of every worker. These appointment letters and health cards are a step towards ensuring dignity and security for those who keep our city clean and functional."
Reactions from Employees
Many employees expressed gratitude for the initiative. Sunita Devi, a sanitation worker, said, "I have been working on contract for years. Now my job is secure, and I can avail medical benefits for my family. This is a life-changing moment."
The event was attended by NDMC officials and senior Delhi government functionaries. The government plans to extend similar benefits to other municipal corporations in the city in the coming months.
Background
The NDMC employs thousands of workers in sanitation, horticulture, and other essential services. Many of them were previously engaged on a temporary or contractual basis with limited benefits. The Delhi government has been pushing for regularisation and better welfare measures for municipal employees across the city.
