Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday flagged off 13 heat relief units to provide respite to people from the scorching heatwave conditions prevailing in the national capital. The units, equipped with cooling facilities and water dispensers, will be deployed at various strategic locations across the city to help citizens cope with the rising temperatures.
Addressing the Heatwave Challenge
The heat relief units are part of the Delhi government's proactive measures to tackle the severe heatwave that has gripped the region. With temperatures soaring above 45 degrees Celsius in several parts of the city, the government has stepped up efforts to ensure the well-being of residents, especially the vulnerable sections such as the elderly, children, and daily wage workers.
Speaking at the flag-off event, CM Rekha Gupta emphasized the government's commitment to providing relief to the people. She stated, "Our priority is to safeguard the health and safety of every Delhiite. These heat relief units will offer immediate comfort to those who are exposed to the extreme heat. We are also working on long-term solutions to mitigate the impact of heatwaves."
Features of the Heat Relief Units
Each heat relief unit is designed to provide a cool environment with shaded seating, air coolers, and cold drinking water. Additionally, basic first-aid facilities and oral rehydration salts will be available at these units to address any heat-related health issues. The units will be operational from 10 AM to 6 PM daily during the peak summer months.
The deployment locations include major bus stops, market areas, construction sites, and other public places where people gather. The Delhi government has also launched an awareness campaign to inform citizens about the locations of these units and the precautions to take during a heatwave.
Government's Comprehensive Heat Action Plan
The flag-off of these units is part of a broader heat action plan that includes measures such as adjusting school timings, ensuring uninterrupted power supply for cooling appliances, and setting up of temporary shelters. The government has also directed hospitals to be on high alert and stock up on necessary medicines and equipment to handle heatstroke cases.
CM Gupta urged citizens to stay hydrated, avoid stepping out during peak afternoon hours, and look out for neighbors who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses. She also directed the municipal corporations to ensure that water tankers are regularly supplied to water-scarce areas.
The initiative has been widely appreciated by residents and civil society groups, who have called for more such measures to combat the effects of climate change. With the heatwave expected to continue for the next few days, the Delhi government remains vigilant and ready to expand relief efforts as needed.
