Delhi Government Unveils Major Green Mobility Initiative Along Yamuna Riverfront
In a significant move toward sustainable urban development, the Delhi government has proposed creating a dedicated 53-kilometer cycling and walking track along the Yamuna riverfront. The ambitious project, to be executed through the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), aims to promote green mobility and combat pollution in the national capital.
Comprehensive Cycling Infrastructure Plan
Presenting the budget on Tuesday, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta confirmed that work on this transformative project has already commenced. The envisioned track will form a continuous 53-kilometer pathway stretching from Wazirabad Barrage to Kalindi Kunj Biodiversity Park, creating one of the longest dedicated cycling corridors in urban India.
The project will be implemented in three distinct phases, with an expected completion timeline of three years. Beyond merely providing cycling infrastructure, the initiative seeks to enhance public spaces and improve the ecological landscape along the Yamuna floodplains, creating a harmonious blend of transportation and environmental conservation.
Multi-Level Parking Facilities to Complement Mobility Efforts
In a parallel development to improve urban mobility, the Delhi government, in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), has announced plans to develop five new parking facilities across the city. These facilities are specifically designed to address the acute shortage of organized parking in busy commercial and residential areas, thereby easing traffic congestion.
A recent presentation by MCD identified several strategic locations for these multi-level parking structures, including:
- Bank Street in Karol Bagh
- Punjabi Bagh Club Road
- Bharat Darshan Park
- Shastri Park in Karol Bagh
- Rajendra Nagar
- Pusa Lane
- Rani Bagh
The MCD has already updated the government about ten multi-level parking facilities that have recently opened to the public. These operational facilities are located at:
- Green Park
- Central Market in Lajpat Nagar
- Adchini Village
- Amar Colony
- Near Nizamuddin Basti
- Gandhi Maidan in Chandni Chowk
- Qutab Road
- Nigambodh Ghat
- Punjabi Bagh cremation ground
- GK-1 Market
Additionally, construction of a parking facility at Fatehpuri Market is currently underway, further expanding the city's organized parking infrastructure.
Heritage Tourism Boost Through Town Hall Redevelopment
In another notable announcement, the Delhi government revealed plans to redevelop the 162-year-old Town Hall in Chandni Chowk into a global heritage center. This project will be undertaken with cooperation from the central government and represents a significant investment in heritage tourism infrastructure.
The transformation of this historic building into a heritage center is expected to attract both domestic and international visitors, while preserving an important architectural landmark that has witnessed Delhi's urban evolution for over a century and a half.
These comprehensive infrastructure initiatives collectively represent a multi-faceted approach to urban development, addressing transportation, environmental sustainability, and cultural preservation simultaneously. The Yamuna riverfront cycle track, in particular, promises to create a new paradigm for non-motorized transport in one of the world's most congested cities, potentially serving as a model for other urban centers grappling with similar mobility and pollution challenges.
