Delhi Government Orders Inquiry Into Rs 6.2 Crore VIP Boat Procurement Plan

However, sources indicate that Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Parvesh Verma has now called for an inquiry into the previously issued tenders and the circumstances surrounding their issuance. This step underscores a shift towards greater accountability in government spending.
Shift to Need-Based Procurement for Essential Functions
According to official sources, the department has been instructed that any future procurement of boats must be strictly need-based and limited to essential operational requirements. These include critical functions such as surveillance, pollution monitoring, and other similar duties, rather than luxury amenities for dignitaries. This realignment aims to ensure that public resources are utilized efficiently and transparently.
Luxury Features of the Proposed Boats
The original plan outlined extravagant specifications for the boats, each designed to accommodate 16 to 20 people. Key features included:
- Dimensions: 13 metres in length, 4.3 metres in width, and 2.1 metres in height.
- Comfort amenities: Cassette-type rooftop marine air conditioners, customised business class push-back VIP seats, a pantry, washrooms, and fresh water storage capacity of 400 litres.
- Open rear deck: Equipped with sofas for VIP public appearances, seating three to four people.
- Power and fuel: 300 HP four-stroke engines with fuel tanks holding 700-1,000 litres, along with diesel generators for electric power.
- Safety features: Tracking devices, very high frequency (VHF) radio signal stations, emergency medical equipment, and water depth sounders capable of measuring depth up to 500 metres.
Procurement Timeline and Revised Priorities
The bidding process for these boats was scheduled to conclude by March 19, with procurement expected to take an additional five months after finalizing the supplier. Initially, the boats were intended for frequent inspections by dignitaries, but the new directive emphasizes operational needs over VIP conveniences. This change reflects a broader effort to prioritize public service over extravagance in government projects.
