The Delhi government will establish collection centres where citizens can deposit broken or damaged idols of deities to ensure their respectful disposal, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Tuesday.
Addressing Improper Disposal of Idols
Gupta highlighted that people often leave damaged idols under trees, in public spaces such as parks, or on the roadside. Some are even thrown into rivers, which is environmentally and culturally inappropriate. To address this, the government is seeking feedback from the public regarding suitable locations for the proposed collection centres.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister stated, "We are launching the centres to respectfully recycle our cherished idols, a heartfelt step toward a cleaner, culturally mindful Viksit Delhi."
Public Participation and Recycling Plans
Gupta emphasised that public participation strengthens any initiative and urged people to share their ideas and suggestions. She added that the collected idols will be recycled and converted into items of utility, ensuring that the materials are put to good use rather than being discarded irresponsibly.
The initiative is part of the broader vision for a developed Delhi that respects cultural sentiments while promoting environmental sustainability.
