Delhi Govt Warns Against Panic Buying of LPG Cylinders

Delhi Government Addresses LPG Supply Concerns Amid Regional Tensions

In response to widespread rumors about potential disruptions in LPG supply in the capital due to the volatile situation in West Asia, the Delhi government issued a stern warning on Wednesday against panic buying and hoarding of cylinders. The government emphasized that supplies of domestic LPG, PNG, and CNG remain stable and adequate, urging citizens to disregard unfounded claims.

Government Directives and Vigilance Measures

The government has directed the police and revenue department to maintain a strict vigil against black marketing and illegal stockpiling. During a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Rajeev Verma, officials appealed to the public not to pay attention to rumors regarding LPG shortages and to avoid unnecessary panic buying or stockpiling. This meeting included senior officials from the food supplies and consumer affairs department, Delhi Police, revenue department, Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), and various oil marketing companies.

Supply Stability and Operational Updates

Officials confirmed that while the LPG booking cycle has been extended from 21 to 25 days as a precautionary measure, cylinders are still being delivered within an average of two to three days of being booked. IGL officials informed the meeting that the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas issued directions on March 9 to ensure adequate and equitable supply and availability of domestic PNG and CNG for priority sectors. They clarified that there is no shortage of domestic PNG supply in Delhi, with nearly 80% of supply to industrial sectors continuing regularly despite reassessed priorities.

Assurances from Oil Marketing Companies

Representatives from oil marketing companies have stated that the supply of petrol, diesel, and domestic LPG cylinders in Delhi is normal, with sufficient stock available. The supply of oil and gas is continuing uninterrupted as before. Additionally, the companies have issued guidelines for commercial LPG cylinders, prioritizing educational institutions and hospitals to ensure critical services are not affected.

The Delhi government's proactive measures aim to prevent market manipulation and ensure that residents have access to essential fuels without disruption, reinforcing confidence in the supply chain amidst global uncertainties.
