Delhi Metro Expansion Accelerates with December Deadline for Key Corridors

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced that several crucial Delhi Metro corridors and significant flyover projects are on track for completion by December, with construction work intensifying across priority stretches. The announcement came following a comprehensive review of ongoing infrastructure development during a high-level meeting at the Delhi Secretariat on Saturday.

Targeted Metro Corridors for Year-End Completion

Gupta detailed specific corridors that are being prioritized for completion before the year concludes. These include the Krishna Park extension to Deepali Chowk, spanning approximately 6.6 kilometers, and the Majlis Park to Derawal Nagar route covering 3.5 kilometers. Additionally, the Derawal Nagar to R.K. Ashram corridor extends 7.4 kilometers, while the Tughlakabad to Sangam Vihar stretch measures 6.3 kilometers.

Further corridors targeted for December completion encompass the Sangam Vihar to Saket G Block segment at 4.3 kilometers and the Saket G Block to Aerocity connection spanning 12.6 kilometers. These strategic projects are anticipated to substantially enhance connectivity across various regions of the national capital, addressing long-standing transportation challenges.

Phase IV Progress and Current Network Statistics

Officials revealed that the Phase IV expansion of the Delhi Metro network has achieved remarkable progress, reaching approximately 80% completion. The existing metro system currently spans an impressive 416 kilometers, serving 303 stations across 12 distinct lines with 32 interchange stations facilitating seamless transfers.

An additional 104.45 kilometers with 81 stations is currently under construction as part of ongoing expansion efforts. The chief minister noted that certain Phase IV stretches are already operational, including Majlis Park to Maujpur, Deepali Chowk to Majlis Park, and Janakpuri West to Krishna Park Extension.

Parallel Flyover Development Progressing Rapidly

Complementing the metro expansion, several flyover projects are approaching completion and expected to significantly alleviate traffic congestion. A notable 2.16-kilometer double-decker flyover connecting Azadpur to Tripolia Chowk, uniquely designed to accommodate both metro and road traffic simultaneously, has reached approximately 73% completion.

Meanwhile, a 1.40-kilometer flyover linking Yamuna Vihar to Bhajanpura has achieved around 85% completion. In southern Delhi, construction continues on a substantial 2.48-kilometer six-lane flyover from Saket G Block to Sangam Vihar along MB Road, accompanied by underpasses at Saket G Block and Ambedkar Nagar locations.

This particular project has attained approximately 40% progress to date. Design and alignment work is simultaneously advancing for a 2.53-kilometer flyover from Maa Anandmayee Marg to Pul Prahladpur, with authorities actively addressing challenges including Archaeological Survey of India permissions, tree cutting procedures, and land acquisition processes.

Future Expansion Plans and Long-Term Vision

Officials confirmed that construction has commenced on the remaining three Phase IV corridors: Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block, Inderlok to Indraprastha, and Rithala to Kundli, with a projected completion timeline extending to March 2029. Additionally, Phase V(A) projects have been initiated, encompassing RK Ashram Marg to Indraprastha, Aerocity to IGI Airport Terminal 1, and Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj routes.

Chief Minister Gupta emphasized that the comprehensive expansion of the metro network, integrated with enhanced road infrastructure, will collectively contribute to reducing traffic congestion and pollution levels while substantially improving overall mobility throughout the capital. She issued directives to officials mandating regular monitoring and ensuring timely completion of all infrastructure projects to meet established deadlines.
