Delhi PWD Initiates Major Drainage Infrastructure Overhaul Ahead of Monsoon
The Public Works Department (PWD) in New Delhi has commenced a significant upgrade of drainage infrastructure in several parts of east Delhi, specifically targeting chronic waterlogging problems in anticipation of the upcoming monsoon season. This proactive measure involves a substantial financial allocation and comprehensive engineering solutions.
Financial Allocation and Project Scope
The department has earmarked Rs 8.9 crore specifically for drainage improvement works along Neelam Mata Mandir Road and its adjoining areas. This funding is dedicated to a multi-faceted project designed to enhance stormwater management and mitigate flooding risks.
The comprehensive project includes:
- Construction and upgrading of existing drainage systems
- Installation of new drain covers
- Building of box culverts to facilitate improved stormwater flow
- Replacement of current stormwater drains along the designated stretch
Detailed Implementation Plan
Officials have outlined that the work will encompass all related civil engineering tasks, including foundation work, substructure development, and superstructure construction. A critical component involves clearing accumulated sludge from existing drains, which will be transported to authorized municipal dumping sites under the supervision of the engineer-in-charge.
Safety protocols and traffic management provisions form an integral part of the contract conditions, ensuring minimal disruption to daily commuters and residents. Following the drainage work, footpath development will adhere to the guidelines established by the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre.
Technical Oversight and Additional Projects
The selected agency responsible for the project must prepare detailed layout plans and cross-sectional drawings for departmental approval before any construction begins. Structural drawings will be developed by an approved consultant and subsequently vetted by prestigious institutions such as IIT Delhi or other government-approved technical institutes when necessary.
In a parallel initiative, an additional Rs 1.1 crore has been sanctioned for constructing a box culvert on Kotla Road and nearby areas encompassing Shashi Garden and the Auto Market. This supplementary project specifically addresses recurring waterlogging issues in these locations.
Broader Drainage Network Strengthening Efforts
These projects represent a component of a larger, coordinated push by the Delhi government to fortify the city's drainage network before the monsoon arrives. In a recent related effort, the government successfully removed 9.1 million cubic metres of silt from the 57-kilometer Najafgarh drain. This desilting drive utilized 32 amphibious excavators and aimed to reduce waterlogging in critical areas including Dwarka, Janakpuri, and Vikaspuri.
Similar interventions are planned for other vulnerable zones across the capital. For instance, in Sangam Vihar, where roads near the Hamdard traffic intersection frequently become inundated during rains, the PWD has proposed a Rs 82.4 lakh project. This initiative focuses on building cross-drainage systems and installing tactile tiles on footpaths to curb waterlogging, enhance pedestrian safety, and improve commuting conditions during heavy rainfall.
These coordinated efforts underscore the administration's commitment to preemptive infrastructure improvements aimed at minimizing monsoon-related disruptions and enhancing urban resilience in Delhi.
