In a significant move to reform the public distribution system, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday announced an increase in the income eligibility threshold for ration cards in the national capital. The new annual income limit has been raised to Rs 2.5 lakh, up from the previous threshold, enabling more families to access subsidised food grains.
Verification Drive Leads to Cancellation of Invalid Cards
As part of a comprehensive verification exercise aimed at cleansing the beneficiary database, the Delhi government has cancelled as many as 7.71 lakh invalid ration cards. Officials stated that these cards were found to be ineligible after a thorough scrutiny of records and field verifications.
Fresh Applications Invited
Following the revision in eligibility criteria, the government has invited fresh online applications from residents who now meet the updated income norms. Eligible households can apply through the official portal, with detailed guidelines and application procedures expected to be released shortly.
The move is intended to ensure that subsidised food grains under the public distribution system reach genuinely deserving households while weeding out ineligible beneficiaries. This is part of a broader effort to enhance transparency and efficiency in the distribution of essential commodities.
Authorities have urged citizens to verify their ration card status and apply for new cards if they qualify under the revised income limit. Further announcements regarding the application timeline and required documents are anticipated in the coming days.
