Delhi Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra announced on Wednesday that the city government will withdraw its Bed and Breakfast (B&B) policy in the wake of a devastating fire tragedy in Malviya Nagar. The decision comes despite the tourism department having recently proposed a comprehensive revamp of the scheme to boost hospitality options in the capital.
Fire Tragedy Sparks Policy Review
The tragic incident, which occurred in a residential building operating as an unregistered B&B, claimed multiple lives and raised serious safety concerns. Following the disaster, Minister Mishra stated that the current policy framework lacks adequate safety compliance mechanisms. 'We cannot compromise on the safety of residents and tourists. The B&B policy, as it stands, will be withdrawn immediately,' he said during a press conference.
Revamp Proposal Overturned
Earlier this year, the tourism department had proposed a revamp of the B&B scheme, aiming to simplify registration and encourage more homeowners to participate. The proposal included relaxed norms and incentives for small-scale hospitality providers. However, the Malviya Nagar fire exposed gaps in enforcement and safety standards, prompting the government to take stringent action. 'The revamp was intended to promote tourism, but safety must come first,' Mishra added.
