Dharwad's Railway Gate Woes End as Two Underpasses Near Completion
Dharwad Railway Gate Solution: Two Underpasses Nearing Finish

Dharwad's Railway Gate Problem Finally Solved with New Underpasses

Dharwad has found a permanent solution to its long-standing railway gate issue. The problem affected the road connecting Dharwad to Karnataka University and the route towards Haliyal-Dandeli. Two new railway underpasses at critical locations are now nearing completion. Vehicular traffic has already opened on both stretches.

Underpasses Bring Relief to Commuters

The underpass near Srinagar railway gate opened for vehicles last week. This gate lies on the main approach road to Karnataka University. About one-and-a-half months earlier, traffic started using the underpass near Haliyal Road railway gate. Swarna Group of Companies carried out the construction work under managing director VSV Prasad's leadership. The project took nearly two years to complete. Each bridge cost approximately Rs 60 crore to build.

These roads see hundreds of vehicles every day. Srinagar gate served as the main entrance to the university. Thousands of students, faculty members, parents, and general public used this route. The road also provides crucial access for commuters, farmers, students, employees, and transport vehicles. These travelers move from Dharwad towards Haliyal, Dandeli, Karwar, and surrounding areas.

Ending Years of Frustration

Frequent railway gate closures caused major delays. Passenger and goods trains passed almost every hour. This led to long waiting times and frustration among commuters. For years, people anxiously awaited underpass construction to resolve the issue.

Now, smooth and uninterrupted access to Karnataka University has brought relief and happiness to stakeholders. Heavy vehicles and goods carriers traveling towards Haliyal and Dandeli can also move without hindrance.

Convenience with Necessary Caution

A professor shared his perspective on the new development. "We have been using the Srinagar route to reach the university since our student days, and even now as administrators. Though it was the most convenient route, the railway gate posed a major obstacle. The underpass has greatly benefited everyone visiting the university."

The professor added a note of caution. "However, since four roads converge at the midpoint of the underpass, motorists must exercise caution and drive slowly. Installing proper warning signage would be appropriate."

Project Details and Remaining Work

According to the original plan, entry to Karnataka University through the underpass was permitted only via left and right turns. These roads have now opened for traffic. Based on public demand, workers are currently building a direct road as well. This additional work should complete by April.

Construction of the Haliyal Road underpass stands about 80% complete. The district administration needs to hand over 22 gunthas of acquired land on the right side. Once this happens, workers can finish the remaining construction within three months. Following this completion, both underpasses can receive formal inauguration.
