Nagpur: East Nagpur MLA Krishna Khopde has assured residents that his constituency will not experience the severe waterlogging seen last year, when rainwater flooded numerous homes in low-lying localities such as Pardi and Lakadganj. He told TOI that extensive efforts have been made to strengthen stormwater drainage infrastructure and address vulnerable flooding spots across East Nagpur.
Measures Taken to Prevent Flooding
Khopde stated, "Wherever flooding occurred last year, I have instructed officials to install pipelines and improve drainage facilities. With support from the Smart City project, some of the required work has already been completed. We are taking all necessary steps to ensure residents do not suffer due to flooding this monsoon." He emphasized that road development without corresponding drainage infrastructure remains a primary cause of waterlogging during heavy rainfall.
Regular Follow-ups with NMC
The MLA said he has been regularly following up with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), including municipal commissioner Vipin Itankar and mayor Neeta Thakre, to expedite pending drainage projects. He added that he is willing to provide financial assistance from available funds, if required, to ensure critical flood-mitigation works are completed on schedule.
Pardi Drain Development Project
Referring to a major drain-development project in Pardi, Khopde noted that the tender process was delayed due to the Model Code of Conduct. "Once the restrictions are lifted, I will ensure the tender is floated, and work begins at the earliest," he said.
Illegal Immigrants Issue
Commenting on reports of suspected illegal immigrants residing in localities such as Quetta Colony and Bangladesh Colony, Khopde urged residents to alert authorities if they come across any such individuals. He said law-enforcement agencies would take appropriate action based on credible information provided by citizens.
