The Election Commission of India has officially announced the commencement of Phase III of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across 16 states and 3 Union Territories. This initiative is designed to update and refine voter lists nationwide, ensuring accuracy and inclusivity in the electoral process.
Exclusions and Future Plans
Notably, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh have been excluded from this phase. The Election Commission cited ongoing Census activities and challenging weather conditions in snow-bound regions as reasons for the deferment. Schedules for these areas will be announced separately at a later date.
Success of Previous Phases
During the first two phases of the SIR, which covered 13 states and Union Territories with nearly 59 crore electors, a massive deployment of resources took place. Over 6.3 lakh Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and 9.2 lakh Booth Level Agents (BLAs) actively participated in the revision process.
Phase III Details
In Phase III, more than 3.94 lakh BLOs will conduct door-to-door verification for approximately 36.73 crore electors. They will be assisted by 3.42 lakh BLAs appointed by political parties. This extensive exercise aims to ensure that every eligible voter is included and any discrepancies are corrected.
The Election Commission has urged all stakeholders to cooperate and contribute to the successful completion of this revision, which is crucial for the integrity of future elections.
