ECI Introduces QR Code ID Cards for Counting Centres

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has implemented a new QR code-based photo identity card module aimed at preventing unauthorized individuals from entering counting centres. In Tamil Nadu, there are 62 such counting centres.

Three-Tier Security Mechanism

According to an ECI statement, a three-tier security mechanism has been established for identity verification at counting centres. At the first and second tiers, photo identity cards issued by the returning officer are checked manually. At the third and innermost security cordon, which is closest to the counting hall, entry is permitted only after successful verification through QR code scanning.

This system will be extended to all future general and bye-elections to the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies, said Deputy Director of ECI P. Pawan in the statement.

Part of Broader Reforms

The QR code initiative is part of a series of more than 30 measures taken by the Commission over the past year. This includes the introduction of standardized QR code-based photo ID cards for Booth Level Officers (BLOs), he added.
