ECI Introduces QR Code Photo ID for Counting Centres Security

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has introduced a new QR code-based Photo Identity Card system on its ECINET platform to enhance security at counting centres ahead of the May 4, 2026 election counting process. This initiative aims to prevent unauthorised entry and ensure stricter verification of all individuals accessing counting venues.

Implementation Details

The system will first be implemented during the counting of Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Puducherry, along with bye-elections in seven constituencies across five states. Following this pilot, the system will be expanded to all future Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections.

Part of Broader Reforms

This reform is part of a broader set of over 30 initiatives undertaken by the ECI in the past year to strengthen electoral processes. The new system incorporates a three-layer security arrangement, with QR code scanning at the final entry point to ensure only verified personnel are allowed inside counting halls.
