The Election Commission of India announced on Sunday that the enumeration phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has commenced in Odisha, Mizoram, Sikkim, and Manipur. This phase began on Saturday, with Booth Level Officers (BLOs) conducting house-to-house visits to distribute, collect, and verify enumeration forms.
Enumeration Process and Deadlines
During the enumeration phase, BLOs will visit households to ensure that all eligible voters are included in the draft electoral rolls. Electors can submit their duly filled enumeration forms either through BLOs or online. Forms received by the Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) on or before June 28 will be included in the draft rolls.
For those who miss the deadline, they can still apply for new voter registration using Form 6 along with the prescribed declaration form during the claims and objections period. The Election Commission has urged all eligible citizens to participate actively and cooperate with election officials during the house-to-house drive.
Electorate Statistics
The four states together have over 3.67 crore electors. Odisha has the largest electorate with more than 3.34 crore voters, supported by 38,123 BLOs and 8,391 Booth Level Assistants (BLAs). Mizoram has 8.75 lakh electors, Sikkim 4.71 lakh, and Manipur 20.92 lakh electors.
Objective of Special Intensive Revision
The Election Commission stated that the Special Intensive Revision was launched to ensure that all eligible citizens are included in the electoral rolls while preventing the inclusion of ineligible persons. According to the EC, every Indian citizen aged 18 years or above on the qualifying date, and not otherwise disqualified under law, is entitled to be registered as an elector.
This revision is part of phase 3 of SIR, which was launched on May 14 in 16 states and three Union territories in a staggered manner. The Commission appeals to all eligible voters to actively participate in the process to ensure accurate and inclusive electoral rolls.
