Hyderabad: Union coal and mines minister G Kishan Reddy on Tuesday dismissed claims of fuel shortage in Telangana, stating that only 106 out of 4,325 fuel stations across the state were temporarily out of stock due to technical reasons, including transportation and indent delays. He assured that the issue would be resolved shortly.
Supply Increased to Meet Demand
Speaking to the media after a review meeting on the availability of petrol, diesel, and LPG, Reddy said supply was significantly ramped up to meet the demand. Typically, the state receives a daily supply of 6,400 kilolitres (KL) of fuel, which has now been increased to 10,300 KL. In Hyderabad city, the supply has been doubled from 3,200 KL to 6,400 KL. Across the state, the usual supply of 8,000 KL has been raised to between 15,500 and 19,300 KL.
Rumours Fuel Artificial Shortage
The minister attributed the temporary shortages to panic buying triggered by rumours on social media about an impending price hike and supply stoppages. He urged the state government and police to take strict action against those spreading false information. Reddy also clarified that no decision had been made regarding any price increase.
He noted that bulk users purchasing fuel at retail outlets were causing inconvenience to regular consumers and urged them to obtain fuel through their designated supply systems. Reddy also advised against storing petrol and diesel at home, especially during summer, calling it dangerous.
LPG Supply Adequate
Reddy assured that there was no shortage of LPG, with public sector companies providing adequate supply. He suggested that small businesses could use 5-kilogram cylinders for their needs.
