Kochi: Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) chairman K Chandran Pillai has announced his resignation, following the change in government. Pillai, who serves as the national secretary of CITU, a national trade union federation affiliated with the CPM, highlighted the Bodhi Urban Development Conclave as a definitive turning point in his tenure.
Shift in Development Philosophy
The national event reshaped GCDA's philosophy, shifting focus from mere brick-and-mortar construction to a holistic model integrating transport, environment, water conservation, and waste management, Pillai stated. This new approach aimed at creating sustainable urban spaces that cater to the needs of the community.
Key Achievements
Under his administration, the GCDA prioritized people-friendly public spaces. Notable projects include the rejuvenation of Rajendra Maidan and Changampuzha Park, along with the development of nine distinct public spaces across nine municipalities. The authority also executed crucial community-centric projects such as the Kaloor Market renovation, the Food Street initiative, and She Hostels designed to provide safe accommodation for women.
Pillai's resignation comes amid a broader political shift, and his departure marks the end of a chapter focused on inclusive and sustainable urban development in Kochi.
