Ghaziabad Power Department Unveils Rs 200 Crore Summer Infrastructure Plan

The power department in Ghaziabad has announced a comprehensive summer repair and upgrade initiative valued at Rs 200 crore for the fiscal year 2026-27. This strategic plan, approved by the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL), aims to bolster the city's electrical infrastructure ahead of the peak summer season.

Key Components of the Upgrade Strategy

The ambitious project includes the establishment of three new 33/11 kV substations at critical locations: Rajendra Nagar, Lal Kuan, and Raj Nagar Extension. Additionally, the capacity of existing substations at Rajendra Nagar and Lal Kuan will be enhanced with the installation of 10 MVA transformers each. This expansion is crucial as the district anticipates a surge in power demand by 400 MW this summer, following last year's recorded demand of 1800 MW.

Infrastructure Enhancements and Deadlines

Beyond new substations, the power department will focus on several ongoing upgrades, such as:

  • Capacity expansion and modernization of existing distribution transformers.
  • Installation of new transformers to replace outdated units.
  • Strengthening of all 33 kV and 11 kV power lines.
  • Replacement of worn-out low-tension (LT) wires.
  • Modernization of substations and upgrading of damaged vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs).
  • Enhancement of protections at 33/11 kV substations.
  • Division of overloaded feeders to improve reliability.

Chief Engineer of zones 1 and 3, Pawan Aggarwal, stated, "Once we receive the signed approval from the board of directors, we shall proceed with the tendering process." The department is also racing against a March 31 deadline to complete similar repair and maintenance works from the previous fiscal year, with about 60% of those tasks still pending. Aggarwal assured that all remaining works would be finished on schedule, with tenders and plans already issued.

Context and Future Implications

This initiative comes as Ghaziabad prepares for increased electricity consumption during the hot months, highlighting the need for robust infrastructure to prevent outages and ensure consistent supply. The Rs 200 crore investment underscores the government's commitment to upgrading urban power systems in Uttar Pradesh, potentially setting a benchmark for other regions facing similar challenges.
