Ghaziabad Development Authority Launches Comprehensive Traffic Decongestion Initiative
The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) has launched a significant initiative aimed at curbing the persistent traffic jams plaguing the city. As part of this ambitious plan, the authority has identified ten key roundabouts, cross-sections, and road stretches across Ghaziabad where extensive revamp work will be carried out to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.
Strategic Infrastructure Overhaul at Critical Junctions
Among the identified locations, the Hapur Chungi roundabout stands out as a particularly crucial junction. This spot serves as a convergence point for traffic from multiple directions, including Kavinagar, Rajnagar Extension, the District Magistrate office, and the police line area. The heavy traffic volume here has made it a significant bottleneck, contributing to daily delays and frustration for commuters.
To address this specific challenge, GDA officials have revealed plans to construct an elevated road stretching from Rajnagar Extension towards Kavinagar and Shastri Nagar. This innovative bypass will effectively circumvent the congested Hapur Chungi roundabout, enabling smoother and faster traffic movement to and from the police line side. The proposed elevated structure will span approximately 1.5 kilometers and feature four lanes, with an estimated project cost of Rs 10 crore.
"GDA will utilize its dedicated infrastructure fund to finance this important project," confirmed a senior GDA official, emphasizing the authority's commitment to improving urban mobility through strategic investments.Comprehensive Mobility Planning and Additional Revamp Sites
In addition to the physical infrastructure improvements, the Ghaziabad Development Authority will engage the Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) to prepare a comprehensive mobility plan for the entire city. This strategic planning initiative aims to create a long-term framework for sustainable transportation development, addressing current challenges while anticipating future growth needs.
The other identified areas scheduled for revamp work include:
- DPS cross-section to Leelawati cross-section
- Madhuban Bapudham roundabout
- Bunkar Mart Chowk
- River Heights roundabout in Raj Nagar Extension
- Holy Child roundabout
- Hapur tri-section on Hapur Road
- Hint Chowk
- Ajnara roundabout in Rajnagar Extension
- Seth Mukundlal roundabout
Historical Context and Traffic Analysis
This current initiative builds upon previous transportation planning efforts in Ghaziabad. Back in 2018, the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) had prepared a comprehensive mobility plan for the city, which highlighted several critical issues that continue to affect traffic conditions today.
According to the CRRI report, the Modinagar-Muradnagar road serves as a vital link for traffic heading toward Meerut and Dehradun. This important corridor witnesses an astonishing daily traffic movement of approximately 1.3 lakh vehicles, underscoring its significance in the regional transportation network.
The research institute's analysis revealed a troubling discrepancy between actual and optimal traffic speeds. On this heavily traveled stretch, the average speed of vehicles, particularly four-wheelers, ranges between 38-42 kilometers per hour. This falls significantly below the operating speed of 56-76 kilometers per hour, clearly indicating severe congestion that hampers efficient movement throughout the area.
The Ghaziabad Development Authority's multi-pronged approach, combining specific infrastructure projects with comprehensive planning, represents a determined effort to transform the city's transportation landscape and provide residents with more efficient, less stressful commuting experiences.
