In a significant move to reclaim public spaces, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) and the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) have initiated a strict enforcement campaign along the bustling MG Road. The drive targets illegal encroachments that have been obstructing newly developed footpaths and dedicated cycle tracks, aiming to restore safe and unimpeded access for pedestrians and cyclists.
Massive Clearance Operation on Key Stretch
Over the past two days, joint teams from the GMDA and MCG have undertaken a meticulous clearance operation. The authorities successfully cleared approximately 1,200 metres of the vital corridor. During this action, 25 unauthorised carts and 15 street vendors were removed from public footpaths, cycle tracks, and green belts. Officials have stated that this intensive drive is scheduled to continue for the next 10 to 15 days to ensure the area remains free of obstructions.
Restoring a Multi-Crore Streetscaping Project
This enforcement action is directly linked to the GMDA's comprehensive streetscaping project for MG Road. This arterial road, known for its dense mix of residential and commercial establishments, recently underwent a major transformation. The project included the development of nearly 4 kilometres of continuous footpaths and dedicated cycle tracks between Sikanderpur Metro Station and IFFCO Chowk.
Despite the near-completion of these beautification works, widespread encroachments had made large sections of this new infrastructure unusable. Authorities reported that around 150 to 200 carts, vendors, and temporary structures were occupying the spaces, leading to severe bottlenecks, accumulation of garbage, and damage to the newly developed streetscape.
Addressing Parking Menace and Future Vigilance
The enforcement teams also identified and flagged the issue of illegal roadside parking along the service lanes, which was adversely affecting the smooth flow of traffic. In response, commercial and office establishments lining MG Road have been formally advised to ensure their employees utilise designated parking premises instead of encroaching on roadside space.
RS Batth, the GMDA District Town Planner (Enforcement), emphasised the authority's commitment. "With streetscaping works nearing completion, our focus is on keeping the infrastructure meant for public use encroachment-free," Batth stated. He added that continuous enforcement and monitoring would be maintained to protect these public assets, ultimately improving pedestrian movement, traffic flow, and overall cleanliness along this crucial corridor.
The drive signifies a determined effort by Gurgaon's civic bodies to ensure that significant public investments in urban infrastructure translate into tangible benefits for citizens, promoting a more walkable and livable city.
