GMDA Plans Flyover and Underpass at Ardee City Intersection to Ease Congestion
GMDA Plans Flyover and Underpass at Ardee City Intersection

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is planning to construct grade separators, including a flyover and an underpass, at the Ardee City intersection to alleviate traffic congestion at the busy junction connecting Sectors 43, 44, 52, and 52A. A detailed project report for the work is currently being prepared.

Project Objectives and Context

The initiative aims to ease congestion at key city junctions and prepare for increased traffic from the upcoming metro station at Millennium City Centre and proposed RRTS-cum-metro projects. The proposed structure, likely combining a flyover and an underpass similar to those at Subhash Chowk, Vatika Chowk, and Atul Kataria Chowk, awaits final design following traffic and feasibility studies. Officials confirmed that a detailed project report is underway.

“We are assessing a combination of a flyover and an underpass at this intersection to ensure that the infrastructure is planned in an integrated manner and is aligned with upcoming transport projects and projected traffic demand,” a senior GMDA official stated.

Critical Traffic Node

The intersection, located at the junction of Sectors 43, 44, 52, and 52A, where St Thomas Marg, Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar Marg, and Vikas Marg converge, serves as a critical traffic node. It connects Golf Course Road Extension, MG Road, NH-48, and the SPR corridor, making it one of the city's busiest road links. Eventually, it will provide direct connectivity between NH-48 at IFFCO Chowk and the proposed Greater Southern Peripheral Road.

Officials noted that traffic pressure on the corridor is expected to rise sharply with the planned metro station at Millennium City Centre and the proposed RRTS-cum-metro corridor connecting Gurgaon, Faridabad, and Noida. A proposed metro station near Biodiversity Park will further increase commuter traffic in the area.

“The project is being planned keeping in view the upcoming metro and RRTS corridors, which are expected to increase commuter movement in the area. Our objective is to ensure seamless traffic flow and improve connectivity between key road networks while accommodating future growth,” the official added.

Resident Reactions

Residents have welcomed the development, describing it as long overdue given the increasing traffic volume over the years. “Traffic congestion at the Ardee City intersection has become a major challenge for us. During peak hours and on weekends, it is often difficult even for residents to enter or exit their own colony,” said Chaitali Mandhotra, RWA member of Ardee City. She added that crossing the intersection itself can take three to four traffic signal cycles during peak hours. “If a flyover or underpass is constructed at this location, it would provide relief to residents and improve overall traffic movement in the area.”

Additional Proposals

Additionally, GMDA is working on a separate proposal to construct an underpass near the Millennium City Centre metro station on this stretch. The Rs 80-crore project was approved by the Authority's board in October last year. The junction, located at the intersection of Sectors 27, 29, 43, and 44, handles nearly 9,200 passenger car units during peak hours and remains a major bottleneck.
