Greater Noida West Residents Escalate Metro Demand with Planned Jantar Mantar Protest
In a significant escalation of their long-standing demand, residents of Greater Noida West (GNW) have announced a mass protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar on April 26. This decisive action comes after over a decade of delays and unfulfilled promises regarding Metro connectivity for the area's approximately 3.5 lakh inhabitants.
Decade of Delays Sparks Mass Mobilization
Organized by the Noida Extension Flat Owners Welfare Association (NEFOWA), a recent meeting saw participation from representatives of over 50 housing societies. Residents expressed mounting frustration over the prolonged wait for essential Metro services, despite repeated assurances from authorities.
"We have been waiting for 10 years for this essential service to be implemented. The time for mere promises is over; we need action," declared Abhishek Kumar, president of NEFOWA, capturing the collective sentiment of the community.
The meeting featured passionate slogans including "Metro tumko deni padegi, hamari mangey pooori karo" and "DPR ka kaisa khel, kab ayegi metro rail," reflecting deep-seated grievances about the project's stagnation.
Symbolic Protest Precedes Major Demonstration
The determination among GNW residents has been building steadily, highlighted by a symbolic protest held recently near the Sector-71 intersection. Participants successfully "pulled" a mock Metro pillar close to the final existing Metro pillar leading towards GNW, visually representing their frustrations with the stalled project.
This creative demonstration garnered widespread support and set the stage for the larger planned protest, where thousands of residents are expected to rally at Jantar Mantar to demand government attention to their transportation crisis.
Transportation Crisis and Daily Hardships
The absence of efficient public transportation has created severe daily challenges for GNW residents:
- Heavy traffic congestion during peak hours
- Prolonged travel times to Delhi and Noida
- Increased transportation costs and time wastage
- Growing environmental concerns due to excessive vehicle use
"We are compelled to face heavy traffic congestion, wasted travel time, and daily inconveniences. We are no longer satisfied with mere assurances. We demand concrete action," emphasized Brijesh Kumar, a resident of Greater Noida West.
Project Setbacks and Technical Hurdles
The Metro extension project has faced significant technical obstacles. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Greater Noida West metro extension—proposing a route from Noida Sector-51 to GNW—was rejected by the Centre for the second time on April 3 on technical grounds.
This rejection means the Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) must now prepare a fresh DPR, causing further delays to a project that had already been scaled down to a 5-station, 7.5 km route from earlier, more extensive proposals.
Community Mobilization and Future Plans
Representatives from various housing societies have pledged to mobilize residents from their communities to ensure strong participation in the April 26 protest. The objective remains clear: to draw urgent attention from government officials and relevant authorities to the critical need for Metro connectivity in Greater Noida West.
The protest represents a turning point for residents who have exhausted diplomatic channels and are now resorting to public demonstration to secure their right to efficient urban transportation.
