Panaji: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday commissioned two new ferryboats for the Panaji-Betim route, named Salaulim and Kushavati, calling them a much-needed addition to the existing fleet. The vessels have a capacity to carry nine cars and 150 passengers, sailing at speeds of 9 knots. The ferry ramp was also upgraded to accommodate the vessels, along with the addition of a toilet block and shade at the jetty.
Minister Expresses Concerns Over Commuters Filming Breakdowns
Speaking at the launch, Minister for River Navigation Subhash Phal Dessai expressed concerns about commuters filming frequent ferry breakdowns. He stated, "When people flush toilets at home, we cannot say who may enter our homes with a camera and publish it in the newspapers. The government has built 100% safe and good-technology ferryboats, yet breakdowns can occur. They happen only due to river debris like wood, nets, and clothes entangling in the propeller during strong currents. Our endeavour, however, is to ensure that ferries move fast so that more passengers avail of the service."
Long-Pending Demand Fulfilled
MLA Kedar Naik said that the two ferries were a long-pending demand for the Panaji-Betim route, which would benefit the people and help reduce road traffic congestion. He added, "The vessels will be available from 7 am onwards daily."
