Goa Dams Face Water Crisis as Monsoon Delay Depletes Storage
Goa Dams' Water Levels Drop Amid Monsoon Delay

Panaji: A delayed monsoon has significantly depleted water levels at the Anjunem and Mhaisal dams in Goa. On Monday, the Anjunem dam recorded only 9.9% storage, while the Mhaisal dam stood at 19.38% of their respective capacities.

Current Water Storage Status

Ankush Gaonkar, additional chief engineer of the water resources department (WRD), stated that the Anjunem dam currently holds enough water to last approximately 30 days. In contrast, the Mhaisal dam is expected to meet demand for around 50 days. He emphasized that except for these two dams, water storage in other reservoirs across the state is sufficient to meet current demand. Gaonkar expressed optimism, saying, "It should start raining within a fortnight."

Anjunem Dam Details

The Anjunem dam, located in Sattari, has a total storage capacity of 4,483 hectare metres (HaM). It currently holds only 446 HaM of water. The situation was discussed in a meeting on Monday, where officials were directed to secure alternative sources, including mining pits, to ensure supply continuity.

Mhaisal Dam Details

The Mhaisal dam at Panchawadi in Ponda taluka has a capacity of 436.8 HaM, with current storage at 84.64 HaM. Gaonkar noted that this stock should last about 50 days, as only Panchawadi and parts of Shiroda depend on its supply. The 10-million litres per day (MLD) water treatment plant at Gauliwada-Panchawadi draws around 15 MLD of raw water for treatment and distribution to villages.

Alternative Supply Measures

Gaonkar assured that if Mhaisal's water stock gets exhausted before the rains arrive, supply will be managed from the Opa Water Works or the Selaulim irrigation project. "Before the Mhaisal plant was commissioned, supply was sourced from Opa. People need not worry," he said.

Other Dams in Comfortable Position

Storage levels at other dams remain relatively comfortable: Selaulim (27.64%), Tillari (30.11%), Amthane (51.86%), Chapoli (40.47%), and Gaunem (44.11%).
