Greater Noida Accelerates Power Infrastructure Upgrades to Tackle Rising Summer Demand
In a proactive move to address escalating electricity consumption and minimize disruptions, authorities in Greater Noida are fast-tracking critical upgrades to key power substations. This initiative aims to bolster the region's electrical grid ahead of the peak summer months, when demand typically surges.
Key Substation Enhancements Underway
The 33 kV Iteda substation, which supplies electricity to industrial Sectors 10, 12, and 16, is undergoing significant improvements. Officials have confirmed that it will be connected to the robust 220 kV Jalpura substation by mid to late February. This strategic linkage is anticipated to enhance power distribution efficiency and mitigate tripping issues often caused by overloading during periods of high demand.
Furthermore, the capacity of the Iteda substation is being substantially increased. Equipped with two 160 MVA transformers, this UPPCL-managed facility has been specifically designed to augment supply to industrial sectors. GNIDA officials have conducted thorough inspections and directed that the substation be energized within the next two weeks to ensure timely operational readiness.
Infrastructure Expansion and Cost Details
The transmission line work between the Jalpura and Iteda substations is nearly complete, marking a crucial step in the upgrade process. An additional 10 MVA capacity transformer has been installed at the Iteda substation, with the entire project incurring an estimated cost of around Rs 8 crore. These investments underscore the commitment to strengthening the local power infrastructure.
Anticipated Demand Surge and Proactive Measures
Noida Power Company Limited (NPCL), the primary electricity supplier for Greater Noida, has projected a sharp rise in demand this summer. Sarnath Ganguly, vice-president (operations) at NPCL, stated, "Peak summer demand is expected to reach around 950 MW, over 100 MW more than last year." This surge is attributed to population growth and increased industrial and commercial activities in the region.
To effectively address this heightened demand, GNIDA and NPCL are collaboratively working on expanding the existing network. Their comprehensive strategy includes plans for new substations and capacity upgrades across the board. Notably, a new power substation is proposed for Badalpur, which will further decentralize and reinforce the grid.
Recent Infrastructure Achievements
In recent developments, NPCL has constructed 11 new 33/11 kV substations and two additional switching stations, significantly enhancing the distribution network's reach and reliability. The discom has also upgraded the capacity of 12 existing substations, adding a total of 152.5 MVA, and increased transformer capacity by 290 MVA. These measures collectively aim to provide a more stable and resilient power supply, reducing the likelihood of outages during critical periods.
As Greater Noida continues to grow, these infrastructural enhancements are vital for supporting economic activities and ensuring the well-being of residents. The ongoing efforts reflect a forward-looking approach to urban planning and utility management, prioritizing sustainability and reliability in power distribution.
