GSRDC Launches Major Drive to Clear Encroachments on Halol-Shamlaji Highway in Shehra

In a significant move to enhance traffic flow and road safety, the Gujarat State Road Development Corporation (GSRDC) has initiated a major drive to remove approximately 200 encroachments on the Halol-Shamlaji state highway near Shehra in Vadodara district. This action aims to address long-standing issues that have hampered the movement of vehicles on this crucial route.

Encroachments Causing Traffic Disruptions on Key Pilgrimage Route

The Halol-Shamlaji highway serves as a vital corridor for travelers heading to prominent religious and tourist destinations such as Shamlaji, Nathdwara, Udaipur, and Kumbhalgarh. Over time, numerous encroachments have emerged between the Waghjipur Crossing and Aniyad Crossing, including both concrete structures and temporary setups on either side of the highway. These encroachments, primarily from commercial establishments, led to parking and visitor movements that spilled onto the road, causing significant inconvenience and safety hazards for highway users.

Year-Long Efforts and Notices Precede Removal Drive

According to official sources, GSRDC had been engaging with the encroachers for about a year to resolve the issue amicably. During this period, three formal notices were issued to the 200 properties identified as encroaching on the highway. Following the recent issuance of the final notice, many encroachers voluntarily vacated their premises or removed the structures themselves, demonstrating some compliance with the authorities' directives.

Coordinated Action with District Administration and Municipality

On Tuesday, GSRDC, in collaboration with the district administration and Shehra municipality, commenced the physical removal of the remaining encroachments. Elaborate security arrangements were put in place by the Shehra municipality to ensure the drive proceeded smoothly without any untoward incidents. The operation is expected to continue into Wednesday, with officials emphasizing the importance of maintaining clear roadways for public safety and efficient transportation.

This drive underscores the ongoing efforts by Gujarat authorities to improve infrastructure and traffic management on state highways, benefiting both local commuters and long-distance travelers.
