Ahmedabad: The state education department has approved the extension of contracts for khel sahayaks (sports assistants) working in government primary schools across Gujarat. This decision follows the renewal of contracts for gyan sahayaks (teaching assistants) in secondary schools, prompted by reports of a severe teacher shortage in government schools.
According to an official communication, approximately 1,400 sports assistants whose contracts had expired will now have their service period extended. The renewal will be carried out under existing government rules and regulations. Officials have been instructed to ensure that each case complies with the provisions outlined in the 2023 government resolution and the terms and conditions of the contracts.
Extensions will only be granted to assistants who meet all eligibility criteria and contractual obligations. The education department has directed the office of the director of primary education to prioritize this matter and complete all necessary administrative formalities without delay.
The primary objective is to prevent disruptions to sports and physical education programs in government primary schools due to staff shortages. This decision is expected to benefit thousands of schools across the state by ensuring continuity in extracurricular activities and physical training programs.
For the sports assistants, many of whom were awaiting clarity on their future, the announcement provides much-needed employment stability and financial relief.
Background
The contract renewals come amid ongoing efforts to address staffing gaps in Gujarat's government schools. The earlier renewal of teaching assistant contracts set a precedent for the sports assistants' extension.
Implementation Process
Officials are tasked with verifying each assistant's eligibility against the 2023 government resolution. The directorate of primary education has been asked to expedite the process to avoid administrative bottlenecks.
This move underscores the state government's commitment to maintaining quality education and holistic development, including physical education, in government schools.
