Gurgaon Anti-Encroachment Drive Clears Slum Clusters Near Jail Chowk

Gurgaon witnessed a joint anti-encroachment operation on Wednesday, conducted by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP), and local police. The drive targeted illegally developed slum clusters on government land near Jail Chowk, following persistent complaints from residents and market associations regarding public nuisance, safety concerns, and traffic disruptions.

Reclaimed Land and Removed Encroachments

The operation successfully reclaimed encroached HSVP land and cleared illegal occupations from the GMDA road network in the vicinity. During the drive, authorities discovered that rain baseras (night shelters) built by the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) had been encroached upon and were being used to shelter cattle instead of serving their intended purpose.

Relocation of Rain Baseras

Officials confirmed that the encroachments within the shelters were removed, and the MCG has been instructed to relocate these facilities to a more suitable location. This relocation aims to ensure the shelters fulfill their original goal of providing welfare to the public.

Expected Traffic Improvements

The clearance of these encroachments is anticipated to enhance traffic flow along Old Railway Road and Jail Road, which had been severely affected by the illegal settlements, officials noted.

Resident Complaints Sparked Action

The drive was initiated after sustained complaints from local residents, who had raised their concerns through formal representations and social media platforms. They highlighted the prolonged presence of encroachments and the associated problems, including public nuisance and safety hazards.

Allegations of Criminal Activities

According to officials, residents alleged that the area had become a hub for nuisance activities, such as open consumption of alcohol and other intoxicants. Some complainants also reported that children from the settlement would approach motorists, seeking money under the pretext of minor accidents or injuries. Additionally, allegations of theft and robbery in the vicinity further heightened safety and security concerns among the community.

Official Statement

“The action undertaken was in response to persistent complaints received from citizens regarding the encroachments and the associated nuisance in the area. The illegal occupation of government land had become a matter of serious concern for residents,” said RS Batth, nodal officer for encroachments and district town planner, GMDA.

The joint operation reflects the authorities’ commitment to addressing public grievances and restoring order in the region. Further monitoring and preventive measures are expected to be implemented to avoid future encroachments.
