Minister Vipul Goel Urges Swift Action on Monsoon Readiness in Gurgaon, Faridabad, and Manesar
Urban local bodies minister Vipul Goel has issued a directive to officials, emphasizing the need to accelerate monsoon preparedness measures across Faridabad, Manesar, and Gurgaon. The primary objective is to prevent accidents and loss of life resulting from waterlogging and floods during the upcoming rainy season.
Review Meeting Highlights Critical Waterlogging Zones and Drainage Progress
During a comprehensive review meeting held in Gurgaon, it was revealed that authorities have pinpointed 159 locations across the city that are susceptible to waterlogging. Efforts are currently focused on desilting drains and repairing sewerage systems in these areas to mitigate risks.
An official detailed the categorization of these 159 spots, which include prominent areas such as South City main market road, CRPF camp chowk, Maruti Kunj main gate, and Subhash chowk police station. The breakdown is as follows:
- Four locations are classified as "extremely critical"
- 39 spots are deemed "critical"
- 56 areas fall under the "moderate" category
- 60 sites are considered "minor" in terms of risk
The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) reported significant progress in cleaning the city's extensive drainage network. Out of a total 607 kilometers of drainage, 408.59 kilometers have already been cleaned, with ongoing work to complete the remainder. The civic body has set a stringent deadline of May 31 to finalize the desilting of all drains.
Additionally, officials noted that 72 out of 97 drain-related projects have been successfully completed. To enhance flood response capabilities, arrangements are being made for 109 pumps and 63 suction tankers to be deployed as needed.
Rainwater Harvesting Infrastructure and Inter-Departmental Coordination
The review meeting also shed light on deficiencies within the rainwater harvesting infrastructure. Of the 468 structures in Gurgaon, 309 are currently functional, while 159 are undergoing repairs. This issue has a direct impact on both waterlogging management and groundwater recharge efforts, according to officials.
Minister Goel stressed the importance of improved coordination between various departments and continuous monitoring of vulnerable locations. He stated, "Better coordination between departments should be established and work should be completed in a time-bound manner. Special monitoring should be kept on sensitive areas so that no problem arises during rains."
Preparations Extend to Neighboring Areas: Manesar and Faridabad
Monsoon preparedness measures are also being implemented in neighboring regions. In Manesar, cleaning operations have commenced on 23 major drains spanning 54.5 kilometers, alongside maintenance work on 42 rainwater harvesting structures.
In Faridabad, desilting is underway for 157 drains covering 196 kilometers. Authorities have identified more than 40 sensitive waterlogging points for focused monitoring. The Municipal Corporation of Faridabad (MCF) has set a target to complete these tasks by June 15.
Broader Civic Initiatives Ahead of Monsoon Season
Beyond drainage and water management, Minister Goel has directed officials to intensify efforts to remove stray cattle from roads and ensure the Gurgaon-Faridabad road is cleared of debris. These initiatives represent a comprehensive approach to addressing civic infrastructure gaps in anticipation of the monsoon.
The proactive measures underscore a commitment to public safety and urban resilience, with all departments working collaboratively to minimize disruptions and hazards during the rainy period.
